Stump Grinding FAQs

Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?

No – we handle that! Before we grind, we make sure underground utilities are marked through North Carolina 811 so there are no surprises with gas, water, electric, or cable lines. It’s free, it’s the law, and it protects your property.

How deep does stump grinding go?

Standard grinding takes the stump down 4–6 inches below grade – enough to plant grass, lay sod, or mulch over it. If you’re planning to replant a tree or pour concrete in the same spot, let us know and we’ll grind deeper.

What happens to the wood chips?

Grinding turns the stump into a pile of wood chips and soil. We leave them on-site, mounded over the hole – they make great mulch and settle over time. We tidy up the work area before we leave; we don’t haul the chips off.

Can you get to a stump in my backyard or behind a gate?

Usually, yes. Our grinders are built to fit through standard gates and tight side yards. Send us a photo of the stump and the access path when you request your estimate and we’ll confirm before we arrive.

Will the stump grow back?

No. Once the stump and main root flare are ground out, the tree can’t regrow. If you’ve had surface roots sprouting suckers, ask about root removal to clean those up too.

What about rain or bad weather?

Stump grinding happens in most weather. Heavy rain or lightning may push us a day, but a little drizzle won’t stop the job. If we need to reschedule, we’ll let you know early.

Do I need to be home when you grind?

Not necessarily. As long as we have clear access to the stump and a way to confirm the work area, many customers have it done while they’re out. We’ll send before-and-after photos when we’re finished.
