Stump Grinding FAQs
How much does stump grinding cost?
Most stumps are priced by diameter (measured across the widest point at ground level), with a small job minimum for a single stump. Multiple stumps in one visit lower the per-stump cost. See our Stump Grinding Cost page for the full breakdown, or send a photo for a free, no-obligation quote.
How deep do you grind the stump?
Standard grinding takes the stump 4–6 inches below grade – enough to lay sod, seed grass, or mulch over the spot. If you plan to replant a tree or pour concrete there, tell us and we’ll grind deeper.
How long does it take to grind a stump?
Most single stumps take under an hour once we’re set up. Larger stumps, hardwoods, or clusters take longer, but the vast majority of residential jobs are done the same day.
Do you remove the wood chips?
Grinding turns the stump into a mound of wood chips and soil. We leave them on-site – they make good mulch and settle over time – and tidy the work area before we go. We don’t haul the chips off site.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
No. Once the stump and root flare are ground out, the tree can’t regrow. If you’ve had surface roots throwing up suckers, ask about root removal to clean those up too.
Do you call 811 before grinding?
Yes, always – and we handle it for you. We have underground utilities marked through North Carolina 811 before we grind, so there are no surprises with gas, water, electric, or cable lines. It’s free, it’s the law, and it protects your property.
