Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Stump Grinding?

Cost & Estimates

Short answer: usually no. If you just want a stump gone, homeowners insurance treats that as landscaping and maintenance. Policies don’t cover that. Insurance pays for sudden, accidental events – not for a tree you chose to remove, or a stump that’s sat there for years. There’s one real exception, though, and it’s worth knowing.

When it might be covered

The exception is a covered peril – a storm, lightning, or a tree that fell on your house, fence, or shed. Say the tree came down from something your policy covers. Removing that tree and its stump may count as part of the cleanup. So the oak that lightning split last month is a different case than the stump you’ve been meaning to deal with for years.

A couple of things to check in your own policy:

  • Look for the debris removal clause – that’s usually where tree and stump cleanup lives after a covered event.
  • Watch for a sublimit. Many policies cap tree debris removal at a few hundred dollars, sometimes per tree, sometimes per event.
  • Coverage often hinges on whether the fallen tree hit a covered structure, not just landed in the yard.

None of this is insurance or legal advice. Every policy reads differently, and your agent is the one who can tell you what yours actually says. Still, knowing the storm-versus-maintenance line can save you a call that ends in “that’s not covered.”

What it means for the grinding

Either way, the grinding job is the same on our end. We give you one flat, all-in price for the job – it starts at a $200 minimum, with no hidden fees. That holds whether an insurer reimburses you or you pay out of pocket. If it’s a claim, your adjuster may want an itemized quote and photos. We’re glad to hand you a written number for that.

If a storm left you with a stump – or you just want one gone – text us a photo with something for scale for a quick ballpark. If it’s a claim, we’ll follow up with a firm, itemized number from a free on-site look – the kind an adjuster wants.
