It’s the first question most homeowners ask, and the answer is simpler than you’d think: standard stump grinding goes about 4 to 6 inches below ground level. That’s deep enough to plant grass, lay sod, or spread mulch right over the spot.
Why 4–6 inches is the standard
At that depth, the visible stump and the upper root flare are gone, the ground is ready to re-cover, and you’ve avoided the extra time and cost of digging deeper than the job needs. For the vast majority of yards, this is exactly right.
When you want it ground deeper
- Replanting a tree in the same spot – we’ll grind down 8–12 inches so new roots have room.
- Pouring concrete or a footing – a slab or post needs clean, stable ground below it.
- Re-grading or laying sod – grinding deeper leaves room to top the spot with soil for a level finish.
What about the roots?
Grinding removes the stump and the main root flare, which is enough to stop regrowth. If you have surface roots running across the yard, those can be ground down separately so your lawn is smooth and safe to mow.
